So you just passed your Technician exam, and you have a freshly filled out CSCE (Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination) form in hand. You know, that little white half page piece of paper that says you earned a new license class.

Now what do you do?

Do you have a radio? Can you program it? Do you need help figuring out where to go next? Reach out to our Elmer's. An Elmer is an experienced amateur radio operator that’s absolutely willing to help you. This can be a daunting hobby to get started. It’s nice to have a guide, and you met one or more of these gentlemen at the meeting or the testing session.

It might be worth joining your local amateur radio club. You already know about us here, and maybe you’ve even joined us. But there are other clubs in the area that are worth getting involved with, depending on where you live. No one minds if you belong to more than one club – we love spending time with our neighbors! Get involved

1. Program the KØEOR repeater: 147.030 MHz, PL 100 Hz. Confirm the offset before programming.

2. Check into a club net.

3. Attend an EOARC meeting.

4. Learn repeater and simplex etiquette.

5. Find an Elmer — an experienced operator who can mentor you.

6. Explore your license privileges and prepare for your next upgrade.

7. Learn about ARES and public service communications.
